Liz Taylor has worked with thousands of older adults and their families. Sometimes Abby, her dog, comes, too.

Welcome to the Aging Well Consortium!

Aging is a natural part of living, the consequence of being born. And now more of us are doing it than at any time in history – so many, in fact, that author and philanthropist Pete G. Peterson calls America’s aging a “permanent transformation” of our demographics.

Yet, we’re not prepared for the vast changes this will bring to us as individuals or as a society. What I have learned is that aging well requires us to prepare for it and plan – so that we can choose what we want and have some control over what happens.

I’ve worked in the aging field almost 35 years – first, as director of a nationwide nursing home investigation, now as a journalist, family consultant, consumer educator, speaker and advocate on behalf of wise aging. Over the years the topic has become intensely personal – I cared for my parents for eight years and am growing older myself.

Throughout my career, I’ve worked with thousands of older adults and their families to achieve as good an old age as possible. We all age differently, yet none of us is born knowing how to put the pieces together to do it right. We need experts to guide us. Our website, Aging Well Consortium, brings together professionals, aging experts and plain ordinary citizens from a broad range of disciplines and experiences to share their ideas. Of special note:

  • Our Blog and Newsletter, Aging Deliberately, offers a constantly changing array of practical articles and tips.
  • Aging Parents helps families prepare for their parents’ needs, while Aging Us weighs in on the transformations our entire society must make as the boomers grow old (then older) – in housing, caregiving, neighborhoods, transportation, leisure time, work time, and finances.
  • The Writers Circle is one of my favorite sections, featuring guest writers from many different perspectives, while the Library houses our archive of past columns.
  • The Company Store and Our Services sections tell you how to obtain some of the tangible, practical assistance that either we or our ethical partner-vendors provide.

You’ll find our site information-rich and easy to navigate, filled with clear, concise tools for moving forward into middle age and beyond-- for your aging parents, friends and family -- and yourself.

Please visit us often to learn from and participate in this evolving conversation.
